Amazon Synopsis: When the autumnal equinox arrives, Numenia takes off with her two sisters and thousands of other birds to begin their long migration from the Arctic to the islands of the Caribbean. But there is a dangerous storm brewing on the horizon. When the hurricane hits, fierce winds rip Numenia away from her family. This small, scrappy whimbrel must make her way through unfamiliar terrain and rough conditions to reunite with her sisters. Battling hunger, loneliness, and raging winds, Numenia finds the strength to endure the elements on her miraculous journey. Inspired by a remarkable true story of a whimbrel who fought her way through a devastating storm, this book brings a brave little shorebird to life through poetic language and vividly expressive art by a debut author-illustrator.
“Numenia and the Hurricane” is a STUNNING book with a captivating storyline, gorgeous illustrations and a tiny whimbrel who will steal your heart forever. Inspired by a true story, young and not-so-young readers alike will be mesmerized by this brave and determined little bird. It’s a story I won’t soon forget, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
When Numenia, her sisters, and thousands of other birds migrate to the islands of the Caribbean, they encounter a hurricane, during which Numenia is separated from her flock. The story takes readers on Numenia’s journey to get through the storm and reunite with her sisters. This brave little girl encounters fierce winds, hunger and loneliness, but never gives up hope. It’s a story of inspiration and perseverance, especially when things get rough.
The story, told in perfect rhyme, is suspenseful and thrilling and you will be silently hoping and praying for Numenia, and rooting for her during the entire journey. The illustrations are utterly breathtaking – I can’t even do them justice with mere words, so I won’t even try – suffice it to say, they are magnificent. On the final pages of the book the author shares the true story that inspired her book and it’s absolutely fascinating.
Parents be warned – your little ones are going to want you to read this story to them over, and over, and over. My first thought when I put the book down was, “I just finished reading a future classic.” It’s a first-class production all around. Well done.
